Varanasi is located in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh in India. It is situated on the banks of the Ganges River, one of the holiest rivers in Hinduism. It holds immense cultural, historical, and spiritual significance and is considered one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The city is approximately 800 kilometers (500 miles) southeast of the Indian capital, New Delhi.

According to Hindu mythology, Varanasi was created by Lord Shiva himself. The city is said to have risen from the trident (Trishul) of Lord Shiva when he struck the ground in a gesture of protection.
