Varanasi is famous for Kashi Vishwanath Dham, there are many other temples in Varanasi that are equally divine. One such temple of Mahadev is Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple. This temple is situated in Daranagar of Kashi. The religious importance of the temple is so high that the devotees coming here are protected from incurable diseases and are safe from untimely death. There is a crowd of people visiting the temple of Mahamrityunjaya, which is included in the Khandok Dwadash Jyotirlinga of Kashi, every day. Most of the devotees reach here every Monday whereas on Mondays of Sawan, it takes a lot of time to have darshan here. There is a religious belief that Bholenath is present here in the form of Mahamrityunjaya Mahadev.

There is a belief among the people of Kashi about Mahamrityunjaya Temple that the devotee who comes here for 40 consecutive Mondays to have darshan, all the obstacles in his life are eliminated and the doors of success open. By chanting 1.25 lakh Mahamrityunjay Mantra in the temple, the risk of untimely death is averted forever. Like other Shiva temples, devotees in Mahamrityunj Mahadev Temple can also seek the blessings of the Lord by offering garlands of Madar, milk, fruits, etc.

When is Mrityunjay Mahadev Temple and how old is it? There is no one to prove this. Because when Lord Bholenath established Kashi on the tip of his trident, then there used to be Daravan in the area of Kashi where this temple was established. Shivalinga appeared from the lap of the earth in this forest and since then till now this grand Shivalinga of Lord Bholenath has been worshiped in Kashi.

Dhanvantari Well: The history of this temple is linked to an ancient well and Shivalinga. There is an ancient well in the temple premises which is also called Kupa. It is said that the water in this well has therapeutic effects on humans. It is believed that it contains a mixture of several underground water streams and has miraculous effects to cure many diseases.

Another story behind the miraculous well is that “Dhanvantari” (Father of Ayurveda) has put all his medicine in that well, hence the water of this well is sacred and capable of having medicinal effects as well as curing various types of diseases.

Annakut Festival: Annakut, also known as Govardhan Puja, is a major festival celebrated in the temple. It usually falls on the day after Diwali and involves the preparation of a large feast made up of a variety of vegetarian dishes.

Pooja Timing: The temple opens at 4 in the morning and closes at 12 at night. Aarti timings at 5.30 am, 6.30 pm and 11.30 pm.
