History of the New Kashi Vishwanath temple BHU

Ever since the establishment of BHU in 1916, Mahamana Madan Mohan Malaviya had a plan in mind to build a grand Vishwanath temple within the campus. Malviya ji wanted a great ascetic to lay the foundation stone of this temple. Malviya ji, while trying to find a Siddha Yogi, came to know about a great ascetic named Swami Krishnam. Swami Krishnam was doing penance for years in a cave named Kandaki, 150 kos ahead of Gangotri Glacier in the Himalayan mountain range, far away from the country and the world.

In 1927, Malviya ji sent the Prime Minister of Sanatan Dharma Mahasabha, Goswami Ganeshdas ji, to Swami Krishna and requested him to lay the foundation stone of the temple. It took four years for Goswami Ganeshdas ji to convince the ascetic Krishnam Swami who was always engrossed in meditation. Finally, on March 11, 1931, the foundation stone of the temple was laid by Swami Krishnam. After this, the construction work of the temple started. Unfortunately, the construction of the temple could not be completed during the lifetime of Malviya ji. Before Malviya ji’s death, industrialist Jugal Kishore Birla assured him that a grand temple would be built inside the BHU campus under any circumstances and there would never be any shortage of funds for it.

By 1954, the construction work of the temple was completed except for the peak. On 17 February 1958, on the day of Mahashivratri, Narmadeshwar Banalinga was consecrated in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and Lord Vishwanath was established in this temple. The work of the spire of the temple was completed in the year 1966.

White marble was installed on the top of the temple and a golden Kalash was installed on top of it. The height of this golden pot is 10 feet, while the height of the peak of the temple is 250 feet. This temple is the highest Shiva temple in India. Located right in the middle of the Kashi Hindu University campus, this temple is situated in an area of 2,10,000 square meters.
